2005 Exchange ends on a high note
 |
As ICAE’s president, John Cloyd,
member relations manager, USAA and wanna-be Grand Ole Opry
singer, brings Nashville Exchange attendees to their feet
with a standing ovation for the ICAE song he wrote, Take
Time to Build a Dream. |
Since the entire Executive Committee of the ICAE is made up of
unpaid volunteers, you might say that the organization gets their
commitment, expertise and hard work for a song.
On the other hand, 2005 Exchange attendees were the ones treated
to a song by ICAE President John Cloyd, which was only appropriate
given the conference venue this year.
“What a conference,” Cloyd commented in his summary. “And
what great memories we will all take away from this year’s
Exchange.
“Sunday night started out with a bang when ‘Dolly’ paid
us a visit,” he quipped. “On Monday, Tennessee Insurance
Commissioner Paula Flowers pointed out that not only are we going
to be facing stiffer competition among companies, but that consumers
are going to have even higher expectations in the future.
“Our keynote speaker Kathy Ashby Merry scared the heck out
of us talking about cloning and genomes and creating new life forms
with changing medical technology, and then Tamara Nault from Progressive
was kind enough to offer us a look at her company’s use of
customer service technology. Our panel on privacy taught us that
you need to burn everything on your desk, don’t release any
paperwork, don’t trust anybody and stop touching that!
“Trish Schoettger told us about the NAIC and received our
thanks for partnering with us on our position paper. Our panel
on identity theft told us that not only can you not trust people
but if you touch that we’ll catch you! We had some
great breakout sessions in life and health and property and casualty,
and Marty Fisher managed to take us through our position paper
on uniformity and still get us to lunch early!
“Gary Kerney gave us some sobering thoughts about catastrophes,
after which we heard from our colleagues and friends from the Louisiana
DOI who have been dealing with the historic catastrophe of Katrina
firsthand.”
Cloyd closed with a few thoughts about where we’ve been
and where we’re headed, as an industry and as an organization.
“The insurance industry has seen some major catastrophes
over the past couple of years,” he said. “I believe
we are going to see some major changes that will impact how we
do business and how we are regulated. Those are just some
of the reasons why I believe that this conference was aptly named
as ‘The Spirit of Customer Service – Facing the Future.’ Facing
the future is what the ICAE is all about – finding better
ways to enhance and improve customer service and make the future
brighter than ever.”
With those words, Cloyd surprised the Wednesday morning gathering
with the debut of a song he wrote for the conference. Leading off
with a verse from ‘America the Beautiful,’ his song
went on with this message:
Take time to build a dream
Like a river that starts out as a tiny stream,
it takes time to build a dream.
It may start as just a vision,
but it takes years of devotion.
The right people – the right kind of team.
We’re breaking new ground for the better world tomorrow.
The future is now, it reaches far across this land.
This is our chance to start.
It’s a chance to do our part.
We’ve got the power.
We can take it in our hand.
Reaching out, together…
We’ll show the world we can make a difference.
When we take the time to be,
Part of the ICAE,
and take the time to build a dream.
Hand in hand, we’re headed for the future.
We’ve got a plan, we’re doing it our way.
And now the dream is coming true.
It’s all because of you.
Just look at us today.
We’re reaching out, together…
We’ll show the world we can make a difference,
When we take the time to see the best of you and me,
Take the time to build a dream.
A dream that shows you care,
and this dream is meant to be shared.
We’re reaching out, together.
We’ll show the world we can make a difference.
When we take the time to see the best of you and me,
Take the time to build a dream.
Take the time to build a dream.
Take the time to build a dream.
